Hyaluronic Acid: The Secret Ingredient in Cosmetic Potions

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

Heard of the wonder ingredient that can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water? We have too!

Beauty trends come and go and so do the "rave of the moment" ingredients that sell products. However, Hyaluronic acid is one natural, cosmetic ingredient that is here to stay. Natural because our skin contains a good amount of HA, and cosmetic because it can significantly improve the appearance of the skin and more.

From wound healing to hydration, anti-wrinkles to anti-aging, Hyaluronic acid plays an important role that has been researched by more than skin care enthusiasts over the years and a lot can be said about its scientific background, including its non skin related functions.

Hyaluronic acid is present on both the outer (epidermis) and deeper (dermis) layers of the skin. In the epidermis, its primary role is hydration while in the dermis, it binds other structures (elastin and collagen) to form a framework that helps maintain skin firmness and elasticity.

Scientific Facts

Hyaluronic acid is a water loving sugar, produced by specialized structures in the skin and is more numerous in childhood, declining with age. Its structure is similar regardless of where it is sourced (bacteria cultures, humans, animals). It is able to bind water to up to 1000X its weight, attract/pull this water into the epidermis and dermis, providing volume and radiance to the skin. In recent times, it has become an effective and major component of dermal fillers used in the correction of wrinkles.

Skin Related Functions

  • Hydration: attracts and holds water in the skin providing volume that fills and evens out lines and wrinkles

  • Smoother skin texture

  • Anti-aging effect

  • Wound healing

  • Reducing dermatitis (helpful in eczema)
